Agathon v Crosse2
So, Agathon may be one of the very best assassins in the game. This was a quick game of Warmachine played on the new Bunkers scenario and i think it highlights Agathon’s passive effect on a match up

My opponent took the bottom side. I deployed symmetrically as everyone had to flow around the gate. My opponent had to deploy his trenchers very conservatively against the threat of nicia becoming a foreboder and 2 hellmouths hitting them.
Turn 1 has my nodes and potential nodes move up to threaten as much of the board as possible. I get one all the way up behind the forest by using tether and a gate place
My opponent moves out, the thamar archon tries to remove the node behind the forest but fails because of an umbral guardian. Crosse moves up and shoots it before feating to gain stealth and run and gun back. He is only 1″ outside his deployment, and spent 4 focus in the turn shooting and casting fire group
Nicia moves up and around the obstruction and ends within 10″ of crosse. This move has a 24″ threat in a straight line. All the souls go into orin2 from his unit, Agathon receives treasure chest and puppet master, an essence from the hermit, and harmonious. Agathon feats and kills Crosse easily.
Moral of the Story
When playing as, or against Agathon it is absolutely critical to always consider the assassination. An agathon who has not feated yet (and Agathon should only feat for assassination) puts a constant pressure on the table. Because of that pressure the opposing warcaster has to:
- Always consider where they can get cover, and where its possible for arc nodes to get past cover
- Always consider how much they are camping, and never drop too far in camp
- Always consider the possibility of an opening hellmouth yanking them out of cover or into LOS
In this particular matchup, both Agathon and Crosse can do personal work every turn. Hellmouth and Dark Seduction are both very strong spells for different reasons, For example a dark seduction on the Thamar Archon could see Crosse being shot in the back with Thamar’s Teeth stripping souls off him. But out of both casters, only Agathon can do work without exposing itself to death. Agathon gets to play a normal game of warmachine, while crosse has to take extraordinary measures to keep himself alive.
That is why Agathon is an incredible assassin.
